HX5 Sierra, a vital contractor for NASA Glenn Research Center under the TFOME (Test Facilities Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering) contract, employs about 400 people—300 at Glenn Research Center in Brook Park and 100 at the Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky. They play a crucial role in supporting NASA’s operations and infrastructure.

HX5 Sierra not only supports NASA’s operations but also invests in workforce pipeline and development initiatives—a goal closely aligned with Aerozone Alliance’s mission of connecting companies with resources to strengthen the region’s talent base. A cornerstone of HX5 Sierra’s workforce development is their apprenticeship program, launched in 2008. This program has successfully graduated around 30 skilled technicians, providing hands-on training, career pathways, and achieving excellent retention rates.

Despite their successes, HX5 Sierra faces challenges in recruiting skilled technicians. An aging workforce, flat budgets, and misconceptions about contractor roles have created hiring hurdles. To address these, HX5 has partnered with trade schools like Polaris Career Center and Davis Aerospace & Maritime High School, recruited post-union workers, and encouraged technicians to pursue engineering degrees for advancement. They also participated in Aerozone’s October job fair held at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport to connect with potential talent.

HX5 Sierra offers competitive pay, flexibility, and a collaborative work environment, making it an attractive choice for skilled workers. Looking ahead, the company plans to host open houses, participate in additional job fairs, and deepen connections with local businesses and NASA’s small business office to bolster recruitment efforts.
